The Woolwich Pier Hotel has provided old world charm and warm hospitality since 1885. Today, the Hotel offers modern British bistro dining and an extensive drinks menu in a range of stylish heritage and contemporary spaces – all while making the most of the beautiful original hotel building and the harbour side location on the Woolwich peninsula.
For the past two years the Woolwich Pier Hotel has received the coveted 3 Schooner Award, the highest rating for pub food, in the Sydney Morning Herald’s Good Pub Guide.
It’s on the pricey side for pub food but it’s worth it. The British-inspired menu offers a range of generously portioned plates including traditional fish and chips with mushy peas. Sunday’s see a full English roast on the menu, changing regularly with cuts such as Riverine saddle of lamb served with sides of roast vegetables, pumpkin mash, condiments and Yorkshire pudding. On a blustery evening order the fat, rustic pork and fennel sausages with masses of peas, gravy and mash, plus four onion rings to add crunch. And good news for the high rollers: they still have that $40 rib eye on the menu if you’re in need of a serious iron boost.
For something sweer, there’s sticky date pudding with butterscotch sauce and vanilla ice cream to finish; or for an afternoon treat, sample the daily fresh scones with jams and clotted cream.
The decked courtyard terrace with duck egg blue awnings and white timber holds colourful cosy bungalows, equipped with communal tables and deckchairs in the shade of a great tree – this is the spot to be with families.
There’s also a more elegant sports bar set up at the foot of the stairs that leads up to the first-floor cocktail bar boasting a wraparound verandah that looks over the Parramatta and Lane Cove Rivers. But it’s in the cavernous main bar, trussed in golden timbers, that people congregate.
The Woolwich Pier Hotel is ideally situated between Sydney’s inner west and lower north shore, and is close to all major arterial roads. There is plenty of parking near the hotel.
You can take your pram along as there is easy access into the lawn area for it. However if you arrive when the place is heaving on a weekend, you may find it difficult to park it near your table (mid week this won’t be an issue).
