Woolwich Pier Hotel

Hotel / Pub

The Woolwich Pier Hotel has provided old world charm and warm hospitality since 1885. Today, the Hotel offers modern British bistro dining and an extensive drinks menu in a range of stylish heritage and contemporary spaces – all while making the most of the beautiful original hotel building and the harbour side location on the Woolwich peninsula.

For the past two years the Woolwich Pier Hotel has received the coveted 3 Schooner Award, the highest rating for pub food, in the Sydney Morning Herald’s Good Pub Guide.

It’s on the pricey side for pub food but it’s worth it.  The British-inspired menu offers a range of generously portioned plates including traditional fish and chips with mushy peas.  Sunday’s see a full English roast on the menu, changing regularly with cuts such as Riverine saddle of lamb served with sides of roast vegetables, pumpkin mash, condiments and Yorkshire pudding. On a blustery evening order the fat, rustic pork and fennel sausages with masses of peas, gravy and mash, plus four onion rings to add crunch. And good news for the high rollers: they still have that $40 rib eye on the menu if you’re in need of a serious iron boost.

For something sweer, there’s sticky date pudding with butterscotch sauce and vanilla ice cream to finish; or for an afternoon treat, sample the daily fresh scones with jams and clotted cream.

The look

The decked courtyard terrace with duck egg blue awnings and white timber holds colourful cosy bungalows, equipped with communal tables and deckchairs in the shade of a great tree – this is the spot to be with families.

There’s also a more elegant sports bar set up at the foot of the stairs that leads up to the first-floor cocktail bar boasting a wraparound verandah that looks over the Parramatta and Lane Cove Rivers. But it’s in the cavernous main bar, trussed in golden timbers, that people congregate.

The Woolwich Pier Hotel is ideally situated between Sydney’s inner west and lower north shore, and is close to all major arterial roads. There is plenty of parking near the hotel.

Out & About Baby Tip

You can take your pram along as there is easy access into the lawn area for it. However if you arrive when the place is heaving on a weekend, you may find it difficult to park it near your table (mid week this won’t be an issue).

Good food and great vibe. Get there really, really early (before midday) on a weekend if you want to snag a car park, or a table in a convenient location, especially if you have a pram – outside is best. Family friendly but gets very loud as the afternoon goes on.

If your heading there for Sunday lunch then get in early – seating outside in the court yard is best and they have multiple private areas and room for the kids to roam. Inside is a little more civilised but this is definitely a Family friendly pub and kids come first. Plenty of parking and is a great location for a mothers group catch up!

Really delicious pub food and the number of people there reflects it. Not a bad thing. Just busy. Really enjoyed it though and was good with baby. Lots of other families around too.

A very busy place to visit on a Sunday lunch, but worth it. Arrive early to secure a table and a serve of the Sunday roast (limited serves are available). Parking can be difficult but it’s all street level (sometimes a walk away with small hills). Ground floor dining and change room. There’s a grass area across the road (not fenced) for children to play in when they’re sick of sitting down. BYO toddler activities (colouring in etc) as we didn’t see any when we were there. Staff were friendly, keen and only too happy to help.
