The Henson

Hotel / Pub

Information

Rating

With its generous beer garden and fun-filled games and rumpus room, this inner-west pub brings all the hipster parents to its yard with its sense of fun. The Henson Hotel was for many years an abandoned, rotting shell of a pub hidden in the backstreets of Marrickville. But with one hell of a refurb it’s now one of the most family-friendly watering holes in the Inner West.

As well as growing a lot of its own herbs, lettuce and citrus fruits in the beer garden, the kitchen sources most of the produce locally. Likewise, the coffee is from Mecca, while Newtown’s Young Henry’s has quickly become the number one beer on tap.

With a community feel that goes a lot further than a drink, The Henson reinvents the inner west pub scene with a great menu, affable venue and a local behind the bar.

KIDS

Children are a big part of visiting The Henson. There is dedicated pram parking, safety fencing, plenty of high chairs and a kids’ menu featuring that is more inventive and healthy than most, with ”real” fish and chips, tempura chicken nuggets, chocolate crackles and inventive milk shakes.

There are high chairs, a small climbing wall, ball pit, Pacman and Big Buck Hunter machines and a Mr Men mural.  And in the unlikely case your kids are unimpressed with all that, they also sell kids activity packs for $4 each.

LOCATION

10 minute walk from Marrickville Station, or a very short walk from Marrickville Rd and Addison Rd buses.

PARKING

Street parking only, but is not too difficult to find in this mostly residential area.

We went there early evening and it was PACKED and we had struggled to get a park beforehand (peak hour dinner time for people with kids plus school holiday). The kids play area was full of older kids so although it would be perfect for little ones it was a tad on the overwhelming side for toddlers. Food was tasty and staff were nice so we would give it another try but perhaps mid-week during the day to avoid the chaos

Yummy food but really chaotic when we were there. It was a sunny day and a weekend so think every family in the Inner West decided to go there. Love the colourful mural around the back – makes for a great instagram shot! 😉

A great option for a weekday family dinner out or lunch session on the weekend. The kids play area and dog-friendly vibe makes it entertaining for any ages. Great pub food and always friendly service.

We (my husband and I) love The Henson. Good pub food and good amenities if you have children. There is a parents room, kids menu, activity page and pencil and a play room. The two downsides are that parking is a total pain and the play room is a bit seperate to the eating area (i.e. you can’t see the kids) so if they are little you still need to stay with them and can’t watch from your table.
