“Powering Planetary Change: Climate Solutions for Africa, by Africa” is a groundbreaking documentary series produced by the African Women in Agricultural Research for Development (AWARD). This series highlights innovative research interventions and scientific advancements led by African scientists, beneficiaries of the AWARD One Planet Fellowship Program.

In this video, we feature Dr. Toyosi Igejongbo, an aquatic ecologist at the Federal University of Technology, Akure, and a 2021 One Planet Laureate Candidate. Her research focuses on reducing heavy metal contamination in Nigerian water bodies to protect aquatic ecosystems, preserve fish populations, and mitigate the impact of contaminated water on human health.

Ikabongo Mukumbuta’s research focuses on soil health management and ecosystem restoration. He is particularly interested in measuring greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from agricultural soils and analyzing how climate change and on-farm practices influence these emissions.

“I chose to study soil science because it is the foundation for agricultural production,” says Ikabongo, a 2021 One Planet Laureate Candidate. “To grow crops effectively, you have to manage your soil. Food production challenges emanate from problems in the soil.”

The One Planet Fellowship, implemented by the African Women in Agricultural Research for Development (AWARD) is fostering a network of African and European scientific researchers to lead scientific interventions.

This inspiring video by the Agropolis Fondation,  highlights Togo’s Kossi Lorimpo Adjah, a One Planet Laureate who conducted his Advanced Science Training (AST) placement in Ireland, and his European mentor, Dr. Rossana Henriques, who later visited Kossi’s home institution in Togo. Their collaboration reflects the program’s commitment to strengthening North-South partnerships in combating climate change.

In this video, we feature Pamela Afokpe, a manager at East-West Seed International and a 2019 One Planet Laureate Candidate from Benin. Pamela spearheads an improvement program focused on traditional leafy vegetables and fruits in West Africa. Her efforts aim to enhance various indigenous crops to meet the increasing demands of smallholder farmers. The objective is to select varieties that are more resilient to environmental changes and pest pressures, enabling small producers to boost their yields and increase their income.

“Powering Planetary Change: Climate Solutions for Africa, by Africa” is a groundbreaking documentary series produced by the African Women in Agricultural Research for Development (AWARD). In this video, we feature Raheli Elibariki, an environmental scientist at the Tanzania Industrial Research and Development Organization and a 2020 One Planet Laureate Candidate from Tanzania. She is working to replace fuelwood in Tanzania by improving access to biomass briquettes, a sustainable energy source that promotes environmental conservation.

By offering this eco-friendly alternative to communities, she helps reduce deforestation, lower carbon emissions, and support local livelihoods. She is particularly empowering women in Tanzania to take on leadership roles in energy production and entrepreneurship.

Sorghum is a traditionally high-value crop and an important staple cereal for over 30 African countries. Despite its rich properties, its production has been fairly low among farmers. Scientists like Molly Okoth, a 2021 One Planet Laureate Candidate working with CIMMYT, are introducing new sorghum varieties to smallholder farmers in semi-arid Kenya to strengthen their resilience to climate change. She also empowers the farmers through training to increase their yields.
